This paper introduces the low level of reading literacy of Czech pupils in the second level of primary schools, as evidenced by the results of international PISA tests and regular surveys of the Czech School Inspectorate. It then proposes four ways that can help to remedy the unfavourable situation in this area.
The contribution looks in more detail at creative reading methods, but mainly at memory techniques that can be used when working with text to remember acquired knowledge and important concepts more quickly and better, to store them in long -term memory and to have them reliably available when needed. The work with a popular and educational text using specific procedures, methods and selected mnemonics on the basis of applied research is described in the final part of the paper.
