Methodology for identification and assessment of localities of segregation: assessment of the suitability of localities for the provision of social housing with regard to the prevention of residential segregation

Publication

Abstract

The aim of the methodology is to evaluate the territory of towns and municipalities and to classify localities in terms of their suitability for the provision of social housing. The typology of localities provides a recommending framework for locating social housing in the territory of cities and regions with the aim of preventing segregation and promoting desegregation.

The methodology uses two basic procedures for the assessment of the territory of cities and municipalities and the classification of sites in terms of suitability for the provision of social housing. The first assesses concentrations of people at risk of social exclusion.

It adds to this the identification of localities with higher social status and higher risks of exclusion. The second consists of identifying localities with risks of symbolic exclusion based on a survey of key informants' perceptions and discursive representations of the sites.

The overall evaluation also includes field verification in the localities.
