The Crisis of Liberal Democracy in the Czech Republic

Abstract

Recent literature reflects many concerns as to what extent public policy actors, party leaders and institutional representatives threaten the core of liberal constitutionalism. The worries are not only about the multiple examples of how leaders do go too far when using their powers but also about enlarging the scope of establishing political practice in the constitutional provisions.

In doing this, the constitution is potentially losing its function as a tool for limiting the power already in place and is becoming instrumentalised for a short-term generational purpose. On the one hand, there is no doubt that any written constitution is under closer watch for generational dispute over the values, procedures and understandings.
