Word problems of the type Unfinished strategies

Abstract

In the workshop, the participants got acquainted with a new type of word problems, the so-called Unfinished Strategy, and on the example of one specific problem, Two Tractors, they also got acquainted with the methodology of how a mathematics teacher in the secondary school can work with problems of this type. The methodology and methodological materials for the other three types of tasks were created by a team of twelve mathematics didactics, Czech language didactics and psychologists within the TAČR project - Word problems as a way to integrate mathematical, reading and language literacy.

The aim of the whole project is to help both pupils and teachers across primary school master word problems as an area that is key in teaching mathematics and has long been referred to as a critical area. The effort to understand the text, which is the most common cause of student failure when solving a word problem, makes a significant contribution to the development of reading and also language literacy.
