Abstract

The text summarizes the current state of knowledge of pyrotechnological devices intended for firing ceramics in the Early Roman Period in Bohemia and indicates which direction it is possible to go in the study of this process. The appearance of the pottery kilns (or other devices) of that time could be quite diverse, but many of them (hearths, shallow clamps, devices without an obvious specific function) escape archaeological investigation.

One of the relatively well-known firing options is the single-chamber horizontal kiln from Roztoky u Prahy. A furnace of this type was experimentally imitated and the firing confirmed that such a device is particularly suitable for firing fine table ceramics, the surface of which is in the Early Roman period usually polished black.
