The paper presented at the master degree seminar in University of Vienna showed more and less complex math problems from the didactical point of view. In spite of usual scholarly recognition that it is desirable to apply word problems in real life situations, the provided examples were presented from the reverse point of view - showing a real-life problem (e.g. comparing the costs of equipment) and resolving it by well-known mathematical methods (e.g. system of linear functions).
Charts displaying the comparison were on purpose presented in several manipulative ways to encourage correction, skepticism and to provoke discussion about critical thinking. All presented examples lead to realization that teachers should stimulate the ability to choose relevant information and identifying the salient connections between the individual pieces of information.
