In this chapter, we provide an overview of historical context regarding the formation of the image of the periphery, how it was shaped by French intellectuals (Andr é Breton, Michel Leiris, Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre), and how this image was imagined by intellectuals coming from the periphery to the center (Aimé Césaire, René Maran, Albert Memmi, Frantz Fanon).
