The aim of this article is to briefly introduce the Prague-based German author Ernst Weiß and to outline the possibilities for literature classes offered by one of his stories, Marengo. After illuminating the structure of the proposed implementation and its theoretical basis, the author reports from practice with 12th grade students.
He works with 3 excerpts, focusing on the personality of the protagonist and the influence that a secondary character exerts on him. The students work on 2 concretizations that lead to a final interpretation.
This should encourage the students to reflect on their own reality - in Marengo's case, it is about questions of their own identity and the role that others play in its development. In this way, the students are confronted with questions that play a prominent role in Ernst Weiß' work.
