The neologisms of the COVID-19 pandemic in Czech and Russian mass media discourse: the linguistic-pragmatic aspect

Abstract

The coronavirus pandemic contributed to the emergence of a large number of neologisms in Czech and Russian. In addition, lexemes that were previously used only in medical discourse (contagiousness, observation, infection centre, antiviral regime, etc.) have entered into widespread use.

The paper examines thematic and structural-semantic groups of neologisms that were used to cover the development of the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences in Czech and Russian media discourse (e.g. names of medical institutions, names of personal protective equipment, medical devices, etc.). The author carries out a comparative analysis of Czech and Russian neologisms that emerged during the coronavirus pandemic and identifies their linguopragmatic features.
