Laws of Nature, Rules of Society, and Freedom: Bergson Today

Publication

Abstract

Starting from a conceptual analysis of the qualitative multiplicity of conscious states, Bergson puts forward a continuist and dynamic view of free action. Not only did Bergson formulate (continuist) arguments in favor of freedom, but also he discovered a conceptual meaning of freedom that had been overlooked until then: freedom as gradual transformation of a person.

The conference aimed at further conceptual clarification of this notion of freedom. Concerning Bergson's philosophy of society, several papers focused on the concept of openness and the correlative concept of rules.
