Abstract

The article focuses on the distribution of augment in the late antique poem Posthomerica and compares it with the Homeric texts. Many studies have examined the occurrence of augmented forms in Homeric poems; the use of the augment in the Posthomerica, however, has not been discussed yet, although the text mimics very convincingly the Homeric language and most of its elements, including the irregular distribution of augmented forms. The beginning of the article describes Posthomerica and its author. The second part summarizes two different theoretical explanations of the use of augment in Homeric texts (immediacy by E. Bakker and conjunction reduction by

P. Kipparsky). The third part presents the results of the author's own analysis of the occurrence of augmented and unaugmented forms in Book 5 of the Posthomerica and addresses the question of applicability of one of the theories established for Homeric texts to the Posthomerica. The author's conclusions regarding the application of the augment in Posthomerica are presented at the end of the third section.
