Single-crystalline grain of UCoSn was extracted from the ingot by means of preferential hydrogen absorption along grain boundaries. Despite the presence of about 25% of polycrystalline hydride in the sample, data on uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of UCoSn could be obtained.
The first anisotropy constant K1 =30MJm-3 (or 120K per formula unit). In the paramagnetic range, the anisotropy is characterized by a 230K difference in values of the paramagnetic Curie temperatures THETAp along the c-axis and in the basal plane.
