Abstract
The chapter deals with Burt's concept of social capital. It introduces his concept of structural holes representing social capital.
It outlines the most critical points of the concept and derives a theorem for empirical testing. To ascertain this theorem's validity it is contested by empirical results and used to refine general requirements for a social capital theory.
