On Interpretation the Oppida in Bohemia and in Central Europe

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

Archaeology currently considers the La Tene period oppida to be the first towns north of the Alps. This theory is based on the ideas of the time in which it became prominent, but is increasingly out of step with the results of excavations in the last few decades.

This paper provides an overview of the development of scholarly research on the oppida of central Europe and illustrates a number of its present problems.
