A Critique of Metaethics in the work of P. Foot and other ?Descriptivists?

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2006

Abstract

The paper considers a wave of critique that has been raised in the fifties against the prevailing approach to ethical inquiry in the analytic domain, the so called ?metaethics?. This approach focuses on the meaning of the value concepts and it is grounded by the strict distinction of fact and value and their logical independence.

P. Foot focuses on this very distinction.

She points to the examples of the so called ?thick? value terms, for example the descriptions ?cruel? or ?rude? where the factual content (description) already implies evaluation.
