On pragmatic interpretations of causal 'hoti' in Homer

Publication at Faculty of Mathematics and Physics |

Abstract

The article analyses the epistemic reading (cf. Sweetser 1990) of the causal ?hoti?, which occurs in Homer in simple affirmations as well as in interrogative sentences.

Exceptionally, hoti-clauses may also have a speech act reading, although in such cases the use of ?epei? or ?gar? is much more frequent.
