Abstract

On the basis of an analysis of a unique questionnaire carried out on the State estates in Bohemia in 1802, the author reconstructs both the situation of individual nationalities living in these administrative units as well as perceptions of the national (language) differences, ability to speak both languages etc., among humble rural population shortly before the birth of modern nationalism.
