Abstract

This monography brings an outline of life and work of an important Catholic exegete of Czech origin, Fr Vincenc Zapletal OP (1867-1938), who taught at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. Born in Vilémov by Litovel, Moravia, he entered the Dominican Order in Olomouc at the age of 16.

He followed then the philosophical and theological studies of the Order in Vienna and the specialised bible studies at the Jerusalem Bible School. Since 1893, when named a professor of Old Testament exegesis, he taught at the theological faculty of Catholic University in Fribourg, Switzerland, until 1928.

He was one of the chief protagonist of modern scientific Catholic exegesis of the beginning of the 20 th century, considered in his times the most important Catholic bible scholar writing in German. He is the author of biblical commentaries to the book of Genesis (1902), Qohelet (1905), Song of Songs (1907) and other scientific works and studies.
