St. Paul's Reinterpretation of Isaiah's Texts in the Letter to Romans

Abstract

The Article studies, which methodic uses St. Paul when he quotes the texts of Tanach in his Letters, aimed to actualize them and to use them as support for his theological theses and for a confession of his faith in Christ to whose side he took after his conversion, without a need to resign from the theological riches of his knowledge gained before.

For a brief insight to the St. Paul's methodic was chosen the Letter to Romans which connects very closely to the book of prophet Isaiah, which was many times before reinterpreted, expanded and actualized.

In Romans we find 27 indirect quotations of Isaiah and 20 direct ones. This is sure very remarkable number for such a short letter composed of only 433 verses (according to the traditional counting).

It is so applicable to research in which contexts of meanings is lead the Old Testament's reader confronted with the broader context of the New Testament's Canon. The approximate translations to Czech are placed to the note.
