The Plzeň Madonna: Notes on the Origin of a Miraculous Statue and the Repetition of the Type in the Early 15th Century

Abstract

The study assembles many replicas of the type of the Madonna of Plzeň from the period from the end of the 14th century to the middle of the 15th century. The numerous replicas in the Catholic milieu from the time of the Hussite wars suggests that the Madonna of Plzeň may have been understood as a symbol of Catholic faith in an era of religious unrest and denominational changes.
