Literate Technologies and the Science of Man

Abstract

This paper poses questions about historical assumptions concerning the literacy/orality dichotomy and argues that the evolution of the idea of man, and consequently of the ?human sciences,? is linked to a technological condition, where this condition can be thought of as a generalised ?literacy? in advance of formal writing systems (hieroglyphic, alphabetical, etc.).
