Intonational phrasing in contemporary Czech prose. A preliminary study

Abstract

The article deals with the relationship between a written text and its phonic realisation in Czech. Its objective is to show how intonational phrasing can be influenced by text structure and how individual texts, selected from short stories by contemporary Czech authors, differ in the degree to which their structure supports phrasing.

The examination of one of the parameters considered to influence text segmentation into tone units in Czech - the number of stress units (prosodic words) in a tone unit - suggests that different segmentation of the texts examined was caused by differences in their structure, and not by the different behaviour of the speakers.
