The distribution of finite and participial postmodifiers in fiction and academic prose

Abstract

The paper compares varying frequencies of the two types of postmodifiers in three text-types and correlates the choice between finite and participial modifiers with e.g. the functions of the modified nouns in the matrix clause or the complexity of temporal relations in the text.
