Abstract
Galantamin in the treatment of the Alzheimer?s disease. Galantamin is a drug with dual mechanism of action, which competitively and reversibely inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and also allosteric modulates nicotin receptors.
Galantamin is able to influence cognitive, functional and behavioral abilities of patients with mild to medium serious Alzheimer?s diasease (AD). It is not clarified which of its 2 mechanism of action is more important in influencing AD.
Dosage 16 mg/day in 2 doses taken with food seems to be most convenient, because it brings both therapeutic effectiveness and good tolerance causing only rarely cholinergic adverse reactions. If galantamine is more effective in treatment of AD than other AChE is not clarified yet.
Some studies show, that analogs of galantamine or galantamine in combination with other substances (e.i. L-carnitine) might be preferable to galantamine alone.
