Life stories as a groundwork for psychosomatic medicine

Abstract

The article deals with so called medically unexplained symptoms, which are being clasified in psychiatric category of somatophorm disorders. The author presents overview of some recent opinions as well as research findings related to this matter.

Particular attention is paid to several aspects of communication between doctor-patient and to importance of their mutual interaction in this respect. The author also discusses both psychosomatic perspective in medicine and prospective benefit of some psychotherapy approaches for patients with so called medically unexplained symptoms.

In the article, some possible steps are suggested that could contribute to more consistent application of bio-psycho-social model in medicine.
