Abstract

Coronary disease is a leading cause of death in developed countries and it can be assumed that by the year 2020 it will become the most frequent cause of death worldwide. (Table 1) Since Sones started angiographic examination of coronary arteries in clinical practice and Gruntzig opened the era of coronary interventions, these invasive methods markedly deepened our knowledge of the pathophysiology of coronary diseases. The whole time the question recurs repeatedly how the coronary plaque responsible for symptoms of coronary disease can be identified, which lesion is prognostically severe and which must be treated.
