Ascendent X-ray phlebography is a method of the highest diagnostic accuracy when deep venous thrombosis of the lower extremities is suspected. However, this method brings a discomfort to the patient because of its invasive character.
It is necessary for a patient to keep at least a partially upright position during the examination. The cannulation of the periphery vein may be difficult when the leg is swollen and other possible risks are local and overall complications following the application of iodinated contrast substance.
Iatrogennic induced phlebothromboses accur in 2 % of cases when ionic contrast substances are used. However, the occurence of this complication can be decreased when nonionic contrast substances are used.
