Perioperative hyperfrakctionated high.dose rate brachytherapy in the treatment of soft tissue sarcomas

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |
2005

Abstract

Brachytherapy with low dose input as a self-contained method or in combination with external irradiation has a firm position in adjuvant treatment after resection of soft tissue sarcomas. Experience with high dose input in this indication is limited.

The aim of our retrospective study was assessment of the applicability of hyperfractioned brachytherapy with high dose input in primary and relapsing soft tissues sarcomas. Treatment by interstitial perioperation brachytherapy with high dose input, self-contained brachytherapy in combination with radiotherapy, the regimens and indications, timing etc., as well as the results of the treatment are described in 21 patients.

In spite of the small number of followed patients, the results prove that brachytherapy with high dose input is a promising method.
