Probiotics in oncology play the most important role in prophylaxis of pathogenesis of colorectal tumour. Antitumour properties of probiotics take part in the inhibition of genotoxicity of carcinogens and suppression of carcinogen-induced preneoplastic lesions and tumours.
In prophylaxis of vaginal candidosis oral application of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and L. fermentum FC-14, B-54 is recommended. Further, L.
Brevis CD-2, L. salivarius FV-2, L. gasseri MB 335, L. plantarum appear to be suitable in forms of gel capsules (L. plantarum) or vaginal tablets (L. gasseri). Strains of L. acidophilus CRL 1294 and L. salivarius CRL 1328 show the ability of selfagregation and coagregation with Candida.
Probiotic strains of lactobacillus might in a rare case provoke bacteraemia and sepsis, primarily in immunodeficient patients and in patients after surgery of gastrointestinal tract. Strains that caused the infection were L. casei and L. rhamnosus.
