Current approach to gastrointestinal fistulae

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |
2007

Abstract

Gastrointestinal fistulae occur mostly following surgery (80 %) but they can arise spontaneously as well. They are associated with substantial morbidity and lethality.

This overview of gastrointestinal fistulae reviews definition, classification, aetiology, clinical features, diagnostics, principles of treatment (including all artificial nutrition, metabolic care, medical treatment, endoscopy and surgery), and prognostic factors of this serious condition.
