In this prospective study, the authors analyzed associations of uterine fibroids and insulin resistance examined by insulin test, lipidogram and hormonal profile. The study included 80 premenopausal women without hormonal contraception.
Ultrasound diagnosis of uterine fibroids was made in 59 of participants, 21 women without fibroids were controls. The results of participants with history of diabetes mellitus type 2 (3 cases and 1 control) were excluded before statistical analysis was performed.
The difference in the insulin sensitivity test (Kitt) between the two groups was not observed and the dependence of fibroids and insulin resistance per se was not proved. Basal hormonal levels did not show differences.
Correlations between fibroids and metabolic syndrome are slightly negative.
