Abstract

Similar to the situation that occurred in China, there was a certain fusion, a symbiosis and the creation of a system which is called “Tam giao” or the “three teachings”. In the views of the peoples and ethnic groups living on the east coast of Indochina - today’s Vietnam - there existed a rich panoply of ancient beliefs and teachings, knowledge of the afterlife and the spiritual substance of natural phenomena.

Often new religious and philosophical systems had to adapt to these original teachings. One of these notions also manifests itself in modern Vietnamese society: “Ancestor veneration” - the belief that part of the spiritual substance of the deceased remains, has its own needs and affects the lives of those left behind.

From the 15th century, primarily in the southern parts originally infl uenced by Indian teachings, Islamism began to develop and in modern times, thanks to the work of European missionaries, Christianity also.
