The aim of this article is to research the ways how the concept of "newness" participates in the discursive construction of new media. I will reflect the social constructivist approach to the emergence of new technology researching how the existing technology functions as an important precondition of new technology.
Regarding the situation of technological change, I will focus on the opposition "new" versus "old". As I will argue the concept of "newness" is not only being used to legitimize new technology through stressing the need for replacing the old one, but also works well for an utopistic narrative of better future brought about by new technology.
For this purpose I will use the Foucauldian method of analyzing the discourse about new technology based on written documents. In a short case study I will focus on historical period of 90s in the Czech Republic when this technology was discussed as "new".
