Abstract

This contribution describes the early investigations of the catenary curve, i.e. the problem of determining the shape of a hanging cord. It is now well known that the result involves the hyperbolic cosine function; however, the 17th century mathematicians described the catenary in geometric terms, and the hyperbolic functions were introduced by Riccati and Lambert only later in the 18th century.
