Abstract
The article deals with the development of byzantine monasticism with a particular view of its economic and political component. It shows that byzantine monasticism formed an important political power as well as economical power, which played a major role in the history of Byzantium and its development.
It also shows the link with the jewish tradition and its spiritual tradition.
