"The Country Looming above All"? : Great Britain as Seen by Czechoslovak Architects between Two World Wars

Abstract

This study deals with a perspective of selected Czechoslovak architects on Great Britain between two world wars. Great Britain wasn’t the most inspirational country for Czechoslovak architects, but there was some british influence in particular specialized topics.

The main „British“ topics for Czechoslovak architects were the garden cities, colonies of family houses and the special British town planning. In these questions, Britain was often considered as a good example and source of inspiration.

Common awareness of Britain was pretty low between architects and this situation improved during late twenties and the beginning of thirties. In the thirties, there were only a few mentions about Britain because this country didn’t offer answers to the actual architectural questions any more.
